Seamus Coleman miss Azerbaijan game as Wigan striker Will Keane is called up – World digital news and sports

Seamus Coleman will be absent from Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan as Wigan striker Will Keane was called up for the first time.

Republican skipper Coleman has been sidelined for Everton for several weeks with a thigh injury.

28-year-old ex-Manchester United man Keane played for England in youth and has scored four goals for his League One club this season.

Chiedozie Ogbene, Enda Stevens and Jason Knight return to the roster.

The trio were injured in their three World Cup qualifiers last month when a last-minute 1-1 home draw with Azerbaijan and Serbia followed after a 2-1 loss to Portugal in Faro.

That string of results put an end to any small hopes Stephen Kenny’s side had of qualifying for next year’s finals in Qatar.

West Brom’s Dara O’Shea will be sidelined with Coleman for the World Cup qualifier in Azerbaijan on October 9 and the home game against Qatar three days later after breaking an ankle against Portugal.

Coleman played in Faro competition and at home against Azerbaijan before missing the game against Serbia.

Cyrus Christie has been called up to replace Coleman and the Fulham defender remains on Kenny’s roster.

Keane, who made two appearances at Manchester United prior to joining Hull City in 2016, is England’s twin brother and Everton defender Michael Keane.

He represented England up to the U20 but declared his intention to play for the Republic in February 2019 as his father was born in Ireland.

Young Norwich defender Andrew Omobamidele, who made his debut as a substitute against Portugal and was hugely impressive after starting against Serbia, will keep his place but keeper West Ham keeper Darren Randolph is out again.

Brighton’s defender Shane Duffy is the only Republican player currently a Premier League regular, with Matt Doherty, Jeff Hendrick and Adam Idah not getting much playing time for their clubs among the squad.

Preston midfielder Alan Browne and West Brom midfielder Jayson Molumby will not be involved as they are suspended from Azerbaijan game.
