Schools Reopen as Cities in Australia Ease Virus Restrictions

New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state, eased coronavirus restrictions after it passed the target of fully vaccinating 80 percent of the eligible population, sending thousands of children back to in-person learning.

Hitting that 80 percent mark today, we have a number of restrictions being eased right across the board, but particularly for parents and kids, school is back. Took my son William to school this morning, massive queues, excited parents. We know, though, for many kids, they’ll be anxious, first day of school again for many. But just being up here and meeting some of the students, there’s a lot of excitement, people — many of our children have gone through a very difficult time, not being able to interact and play with their friends. To be back in the classroom is an exciting day. Today as well, as you know, 80 percent means that we’re lifting many restrictions. Caps are gone on weddings and funerals. We can now stand up and have a drink in a bar. There’s still a long way to go. This journey is not over. We have a first-dose rate above 90 percent. We want to get that even higher. And if people can continue to make that effort, that will make a real difference to ensure we can open up as safely as possible.
