England winger completes £ 73m transfer to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund – Sport News

Jadon Sancho returns to North West England from Germany after previously playing for Manchester City

England winger Jadon Sancho says joining Manchester United is “a dream come true” after completing his £ 73 million signing from Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho is the second most expensive English player of all time behind his new United teammate Harry Maguire.

He joins United on a five-year contract.

“I will always be grateful to Dortmund for giving me the opportunity to play first team football, although I always knew that I would return to England,” said Sancho, 21.

“The opportunity to join Manchester United is a dream come true and I can’t wait to play in the Premier League.”

“This is a young and exciting team and I know that together we can become something special to bring the success that fans deserve.”

United agreed to Sancho’s rate on July 1 and his five-year contract with the club has an additional 12-month option.

The completion of the deal ends United’s protracted manhunt of former Manchester City player Sancho. They had hoped to sign him last summer, but couldn’t agree on a rate.

Sancho scored 50 goals and recorded 57 assists in 137 appearances for Dortmund.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Old Trafford will give Sancho “the platform he needs to unleash his talent untapped.”

“Jadon personifies the type of player I want to bring to the club – he is a striker in the best Manchester United traditions,” Solskjaer told the club’s website.

“He will be an integral part of my team for years to come and we look forward to seeing him flourish. His goals and assist records speak for themselves and he will also bring tremendous pace, style and creativity to the team.”

How does Sancho compare to the Manchester United attackers?

Sancho’s move to Old Trafford will see him bond not only with his England teammate Rashford, but also with Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood in what could prove to be a formidable attack for Solskjaer’s team.

Sancho scored 16 goals in all competitions during the 2020-21 season, five fewer than Rashford, but four more than Greenwood and nine more than Martial. Cavani, who joined United on a free transfer last year after leaving Paris St-Germain, scored 17.

In four seasons at Dortmund, Sancho had 57 assists and created 65 great chances, more than Rashford, Martial, Greenwood and Cavani during the same period.
