Brazil recall eight Premier League players for World Cup qualification – World digital news and sports

Brazil picked eight Premier League players to qualify for the World Cup in October despite the country still being on the UK’s red travel list.

Last month, most English clubs refused to release players called up from South American countries.

Currently, anyone traveling to Brazil from the UK must be quarantined for 14 days upon arrival in the country and 10 days upon return to the UK.

However, the Brazilian association said there had been “positive talks” about travel exemptions.

Liverpool duo Alisson and Fabinho, Manchester City’s Ederson and Gabriel Jesus, Chelsea defender Thiago Silva, Manchester United midfielder Fred, Leeds striker Raphinha and Tottenham defender Emerson Royal have all been called up to face Venezuela, Colombia and Uruguay.

Former Middlesbrough midfielder Juninho Paulista, Brazil’s national team coordinator, said the eight England-based players had been called up, believing that an agreement would be reached next week that would allow players to bypass travel restrictions.

“We have had many positive meetings with Fifa, the Premier League and the UK government and we trust that there will be a positive solution next week,” he said. “That’s why we called them.”

The Brazilian Football Association must have a separate agreement with the country’s health authority to exempt England-based players from quarantine upon arrival.

In August, the Premier League issued a statement saying their clubs had “reluctantly but unanimously” decided not to allow players to play in Red List countries during the international break in September.

However, four players, Emiliano Buendia and Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa and Giovani lo Celso and Cristian Romero from Tottenham, traveled to Argentina to join their national team.

But that led to weird scenes in Sao Paulo’s Corinthians Arena when the Brazil-Argentina World Cup qualifier was abandoned after five minutes when Brazilian health officials stopped the game and said the four players living in England needed to be quarantined for Argentina.

Despite complaints from the Brazilian Football Association and those from Mexico, Paraguay and Chile that the Premier League does not allow players to play, all affected players were allowed to play their next games for their clubs.

Fifa has the authority to ban players who are not allowed to play for their national teams for five days.

Brazil have won all eight of their qualifiers so far and are six points ahead of Argentina at the top of the South American qualifying group for Qatar 2022.

“There has to be a solution” – Klopp
Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has called on the British government to find “somehow a solution” to prevent another dispute between the club and the country.

“Of course there has to be a solution because we can’t just leave it and say it’s not a problem. Yes, it’s a problem,” he said.

“I’m pretty sure the relevant people are working on it. I know they are working on it, but nothing is decided yet, at least as far as I’m concerned.

“We have a problem when the Brazilians are admitted or go to the next internationals.”

Liverpool will travel to Watford on September 16 without Alisson and Fabinho as Brazil host Uruguay on September 15.

Klopp added: “I know it’s a problem with Liverpool and nobody else’s and good for Watford.

“But I just don’t know how to do things like that where no one responds to the schedule. We have two problems. One is the schedule, it has always been a problem.

“TV and other guys in the Premier League are saying, ‘Okay, that’s it, they have to play, let’s see how they can sort it out.’

“Besides, it’s not good for the players or the clubs and I hope the government can find a solution.”
