A woman died and a man was injured after actor Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun on a New Mexico film set.
Police in the U.S. state said Mr. Baldwin fired the gun while filming the 19th century western Rust.
Ms. Halyna Hutchins was flown to the hospital in a helicopter but died of her injuries. The man, director Joel Souza, received emergency treatment.
A spokesman for Mr Baldwin told the AP news agency the incident involved the misfire of a prop gun with spaces in it.
Ms. Hutchins, 42, worked as a camerawoman on the set. Mr Souza, 48, was taken from the scene in an ambulance, but details of his injuries were not disclosed.
Police are still investigating the incident at Bonanza Creek Ranch, a popular film location, and no charges have been brought.
In a statement to the AFP news agency, a spokesman for the Santa Fe sheriff said Mr Baldwin had spoken to detectives.
“He came in voluntarily and left the building after finishing his interviews,” said the spokesman.
According to her personal website, Ms. Hutchins was from Ukraine and grew up on a Soviet military base in the Arctic Circle. She studied journalism in Kiev and film in Los Angeles and was named “Rising Star” by American Cinematographer Magazine in 2019.
She was the camerawoman for the 2020 action film Archenemy, directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer.
“I’m so sad to have lost Halyna. And so angry that this could happen on a set,” Mortimer said in a tweet.
In a statement, the International Cinematographer’s Guild said the death of Ms. Hutchins was “devastating news” and “a terrible loss”.
“The details are currently unclear, but we are working to find out more and we support a full investigation into this tragic event,” said Guild President John Lindley and General Manager Rebecca Rhine.
Police said the sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Bonanza Creek Ranch around 1:50 p.m. local time (19:50 GMT) after receiving an 911 call about a shooting on the set.
Baldwin co-produced and plays the film’s namesake, an outlaw whose 13-year-old grandson was convicted of accidental murder.
The oldest of four brothers, all actors, Mr. Baldwin has starred in numerous television and film roles since the 1980s.
He won numerous awards for his role as Jack Donaghy on the NBC sitcom 30 Rock. His portrayal of Donald Trump on the Saturday Night Live sketch show also earned him critical acclaim and a third Primetime Emmy.
Incidents like Thursday’s fatal shooting on the Rust film set are extremely rare, but not unheard of.
Real firearms are often used in filming and are loaded with blanks – cartridges that produce a flash and a bang without firing a projectile.
In 1993, Brandon Lee – the 28-year-old son of late martial arts star Bruce Lee – died on the set after he was accidentally shot with a prop gun while filming a death scene for The Crow.
It was later found that the weapon used had previously fired a cartridge, which caused a cartridge to become lodged in the barrel. When empty rounds were fired later, the cartridge was removed and released.
In response to Thursday’s news, Brandon Lee’s sister Shannon tweeted, “Our hearts go out to the family of Halyna Hutchins and Joel Souza and everyone involved in the ‘Rust’ incident. Nobody should ever be killed by a gun in a movie. ”Set. Point.”
